A Marriage Certificate is a certificate that proves the relation between husband & wife A marriage certificate is mandatory for any legal work relating to marriage. Marriage Certificate  is issued from district marriage registrar as per religious marriage and special marriage acts. There are two categories of marriage mentioned in the Indian marriage code of conduct:-

1.      The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

2.      The Special Marriage Act, 1954.

The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable for cases where both  the husband and wife  are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs and if they were converted to any of these religions.

The Special Marriage Act is applicable for cases where both the husband and wife are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs.


Benefits of Marriage Certificate :

Certificate of marriage is a document providing social security, self-confidence particularly among married women.
Marriage Certificate, its usage continues while appealing for passport service, visa to obtain for the wife/husband.
Certificate of marriage is a document, which provides valuable evidence of marriage.
It will be helpful in claiming the Family pension or Bank deposits or Life Insurance benefits when the depositee or the Insurer dies without a nomination or otherwise.
A Marriage Certificate is the proof of registration of a marriage.
Where the marriage certificate does help is in the case of a husband working and living overseas on a work permit or long-term residence a visa and wants the wife to join him. No foreign embassy or consulate grants a visa to a spouse without proof in the form of a marriage certificate.
In cases of divorce, legal separation, alimony, or custody of children, courts may insist on seeing the marriage certificate.


Eligibility for Applying  Marriage Certificate :

Both parties should be more than 21 years of age for males and 18 years for females.

The parties must live for at least one month in the district where marriage is to be registered.

There should not be more than one spouse of any of the parties at the time of marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act it is allowed.

Documents Required for Marriage Registration in Maharashtra:

The following documents must be attached while applying for the marriage certificate in Maharashtra:

1.      Address  Proof  of both parties.

2.      Aadhar  Card or Voter ID Card of both parties.

3.      2 Witnesses with Aadhar  Card and passport size photo.

4.      Birth Certificate both parties(Age Proof)

5.      Marriage Invitation Card or Marriage Document of Gurudwara or Temple.

6.      2 Marriage Photograph.

7.      Divorce Decree in case of any or both Bride and Groom are Divorcee.

8.      Death Proof or relating document of the previous spouse in case of widow or Windower.
